May 2012 eNews Happy Mother’s Day from Dr. Marla H. Wohlman and Staff

At last, spring is here. It’s time to cast off the winter doldrums and welcome the sun! Here are a few tips that can help keep your skin safe and healthy as you start to enjoy more outdoor activities.

If there’s one thing every busy mom should keep close by this season, it’s sunscreen. As we go from the ball field to the beach… the one product that will protect us from both developing skin cancer and premature age-related skin changes is sunscreen. We believe it’s so important that we are offering 20% off our entire line of sunscreens now through the end of May!

Replenishing Sunblock SPF 36
TIZO 3 Protection SPF 40

Remember to always choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Be sure to top that with mineral makeup for extra protection. The minerals in mineral make-up are physical blocks to the absorption of harmful UV rays.

Skin cancer is the most common malignancy. The American Cancer Society reports that skin cancer accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. 1 out of 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year.

Ultraviolet rays are the leading cause of skin cancer. The sun and the changes in the earth’s ozone layer are partially to blame. Fight back against premature skin aging and the occurrence of skin cancer! Sun protection is essential. Don’t be fooled… tanning beds will cause cancer. The ultraviolet rays from tanning beds are classified as carcinogens!

Teach your children to follow these ABC’s of sun protection:

A: Avoid the sun from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

B: Apply sunscreen every 2-4 hours when outside. If you’re enjoying water activities, ensure your sunscreen is waterproof and apply every hour.

C: Cover up. Choose a hat with a 4” wide brim and loose, tightly-woven clothing.

Remember, these rules apply even when the sky is overcast. Ultraviolet rays travel through clouds and the windows of your car!
